The Prediction of Thermal Front as Skipjack (Katsuwonus pelamis) Potential Fishing Ground Indicator in Banda Waters
Abstract
The front area is one of the oceanographic processes that also affects the abundance and distribution of fish. The purpose of this research are to identifies several parameters which affect to skipjack distribution in Banda Waters, which are sea surface themperature (SST) and thermal front phenomenon. Sampling was conducted on February until Apryl by fishing base at Pelabuhan Perikanan Samudera (PPS) Kendari which located in west Banda Waters and in the east fishing base located in Sorong fishing port. Image datas was using aqua MODIS satellite levels 3 monthly, analyzing thermal front by using cornillon and cayula methods which perfected with single image edge detection (SIED) tools in arcGIS application, regression test using R program Generalized Additive Model (GAM). Oceanoghrapic parameters identification result against skipjack distribution indicated: thermal front was significantly correlated, whereas ideal distance of skipjack fishing from 0-18 km away of fishing grounds location, sea surface temperature was correlated significantly against fishing production, skipjack at Banda Waters tend to fill space at the ocean in range 28°-30°C of sea surface temperature (SST).
