Sustainable Status of Vaname Shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) Through Multi Dimensional Scaling (MDS) Approach
Abstract
Aquaculture Business Center (ABC) is the first shrimp pond area in Indonesia, located in Pusakajaya Utara Village, Karawang Regency. Vaname shrimp is a superior product and is one species with high commercial value. The problem of this research is increasing shrimp production can have negative environmental and socio-economic impacts. This study aims to evaluate the sustainability status of shrimp farming. This research was conducted from July to October 2020. This research was conducted by direct observation and interviews with the community and pond workers. Data analysis used the Rapid Appraisal for Fisheries (Rapfish) method through the Multi-Dimensional Scaling (MDS) approach with 5 (five) dimensions, namely: ecological, economic, social, institutional, and technological. The results showed that the dimensions of ecology (30.11%), economic (46.93%), social (43.47%), technology (63.54%), legal and institutional (24.80%). This study concludes that the shrimp ponds are poorly sustainable in ecological, economic, and social dimensions while the legal and institutional dimensions are badly sustainable but the technology is quite sustainable. Environmentally friendly and sustainable vaname shrimp cultivation activities require commitment from all parties, including the government, the private sector, the community, and other stakeholders.
