Distribution of Nitrate and Phosphate on the Surface of Sabu Raijua
Abstract
Nitrates and phosphates are very important nutrients and are needed by marine organisms for metabolism, growth and reproduction. This study aims to determine the distribution of nitrate and phosphate on the surface of the Sabu Raijua waters to determine the level of fertility in these waters. Water samples were taken in situ and analyzed using spectrophotometric methods and then interpolated using the Inverse Distance Weighted (IDW) method to see the distribution pattern. The measurement results show that the concentration of nitrate and phosphate is above the sea water quality standard for marine life. The nitrate concentration ranged from 0.124 – 0.235 mg/L with an average of 0.175 mg/L, while the phosphate concentration ranged from 0.010 – 0.038 mg/L with an average of 0.017 mg/L. Nitrate shows a distribution pattern that is relatively more concentrated in residential areas, while phosphate has a relatively higher distribution pattern in the western waters. The level of water fertility based on nitrate concentration is in the oligotrophic category, while based on the phosphate concentration it is in the mesotrophic – eutrophic category. Redfield N:P ratio shows that nitrogen is generally a limiting factor for primary productivity in Sabu Raijua waters.
